The Forest Floor

Every year the forest makes its leaves and drops them on the earth to make more earth. Over and over, again and again. The never-endingness of leaves:

Leaves of grass, leaves of trees, leaves of books, leaves of leaves.
Leave-takings.
Keep-saking. Safe-keepings.
The page-turnings and leaf-turnings of time.
The forest floor as altar cloth. Ancestors underfoot.
Layers of meaning, if only we could know.
The leaf as a leaf, the enoughness of beauty.
