CONJURING
These drawings and paintings are studies toward a conjuring art, where the act of making the art is also an act of magic or the performance of a protective or generative rite (a prayer). With this attitude, each piece becomes a verb rather than a noun—a repository of process and an actor in the world. In one sense, all art is this way, as it gives form to symbols that emerge from the unknown and at least dimly recognizes their intentions.
I made the pieces shown in 2004-2005, and went back to finish or update a number of them in 2019, when their intentions became more clear. A few of them changed drastically in the interim; others needed only small clarifications.
They are acrylic and mixed media on paper or cardboard. They range in size from about 6” x 4” to about 7” x 15”. I had thought to use them as models for larger pieces, but they seem to enjoy being small and rough.
